Bedale Art Group - 16th February

Thank you for attending my Oil workshop on Saturday, it was great to see you all again. As promised this is the completed painting 'Sunshine and Showers / Whitby'.

I spent around half an hour adding highlights to the distant Whitby headland and 'softening' some of the cloud edges.

Finally, I completed the sea by adding a few more rocks and the sparkling light effect.

The wet beach was 'cooled' down a little by adding 'blue / greys' to the still wet colour.

Demonstration for Whitby Art Society 11th January 2012

Many thanks to all who attended my Watercolour Demonstration on Wednesday evening at Sneaton Castle.
After looking at the painting on Thursday morning I was pleased to see it needed less work than I had anticipated to finish it!
So to complete the painting I carried out the following steps:

I deepened the 'darks' on the gable end of the cottage by further 'wet into wet' glazes of Raw Sienna & Permanent Magenta and Cobalt Blue & Permanent Magenta.

I worked on the car a little to create a more convincing form.

I added washes of Raw Sienna & Cobalt Violet, Cobalt Blue & Permanent, Cobalt Blue & Permanent Magenta & Raw Sienna to the foreground snow

Lastly I gave the dark hedges a final glaze with Cobalt Blue & Permanent Magenta.

Things you might like to know about Christmas...

1. Many parts of the Christmas tree can actually be eaten, with the needles being a good source of Vitamin C.

2. The chances of a white Christmas are just 1 in 10 for England and Wales, and 1 in 6 for Scotland and Northern Ireland

3. The tradition of putting tangerines in stockings comes from 12th-century French nuns who left socks full of fruit, nuts and tangerines at the houses of the poor..

4. Hanging presents on trees may come from the Druids who believed the tree was the giver of all good things.

5. The abbreviation Xmas isn't irreligious. The letter X is a Greek abbreviation for Christ.

Christmas Art Festival at Sneaton Castle 26th & 27th November

A Christmas Art Festival has been planned by Whitby Art Society and Endeavour Rotary Club and will be held at Sneaton Castle on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th November 2011 starting each day at 10.00am until 4.00pm.
Entry to the festival is free and there is ample free and safe car parking. Art works by members, including local professional artists, will be on sale at various prices ideal for Christmas presents or perhaps a memento of time spent in such a beautiful area.
Tea, coffee and light lunches, including some seasonal fare, will also be available both days.
There will be a lucky dip for valuable original paintings, a silent auction and seasonal music performed by the Tuesday Singers on Saturday between 2 and 3 pm.
All monies raised by Whitby Art Society and Endeavour Rotary during the event will be donated to a local Whitby charity.
Please drop in if you are in the area.

Painting Atmospheric Watercolour Landscape DVD Review

'I have been painting in watercolor for over 20 years, and like all artists, I am still learning.

Once you tell yourself you have nothing left to learn, that is the time when your paintings will stay as they are, not getting any better.

With this in mind, I have to say that, if you want to take your art a step further, then this DVD will do just that. Robert Brindley takes you through over 2 hours of 100% enjoyment with his easy way of showing you just what he can do.
From mixing color, to applying masking fluid at the right times, and then using the correct washes that has been mixed and ready to go. The result being master class.
Buying this DVD will be one of the best investments you can make, toward improving your art. The only set back I can see, is that there isn't another 20 to go out and buy. I could watch this guy all day long, and still want for more.
Buy it, you will not be disappointed...Hope this helps you..

Pickering Art Society Demonstration 10th November

Thanks to all who attended my demonstration on Thursday evening. The finished painting is shown below.

Around half an hour was spent tidying up the two Cobles and adding texture to the foreground. Highlights were added to the mooring ropes, the cobles and tops of the walls using white acrylic, tinted with either Cadmium Orange or Cerulean Blue.

I have been invited to take part in the prestigious Pure Watercolour Society's annual exhibition, held at The Windrush Gallery, Windrush, Nr. Burford.

The exhibition runs from Sunday 9th October to Saturday 22nd October, open 11am to 5pm daily.

West Norfolk Arts Centre - 3 Day Course

'Smallholding / North Yorkshire Moors' - Around 15 minutes were spent adding branches, twiggs, fenceposts etc. Texture was added to the snow covered roofs and a little colour was taken out of the dark cottage roof.

Sketch, 'Windbreaks / Old Hunstanton' - The debris on the tideline was softened with a light coloured pastel pencil.

'Windmill / Burnham Overy' - A little work was carried out to lighten up the distant sun-lit fields. Texture was added to the foreground and a few branches added to the small clump of trees standing in front of the hedgeline. Some edges were 'softened' on the hedges and trees.
