Light and Shade, Great Gable - Oil Demonstration - March 2017

Step 1

A pre-prepared board under-painted with a wash of Cadmium Red and Lemon Yellow was selected for this painting.
The subject was drawn out using a 2B pencil and the 'Block In' commenced using various mixes of
Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Red, very small amounts Lemon Yellow and Titanium White.

Step 2

The painting was developed using the same colour mixes, plus slightly lighter tones, using more White.

Step 3

In this step, Cerulean Blue and Titanium White were used for the Snow in sunlight.

Step 4

I now moved my attention to the foreground slopes, using various mixes of Cadmium Red, Lemon Yellow, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean and Titanium White.
In this stage, I allowed some of the 'warm' underpainting from the board to show through.

Step 5

I completed the painting by adding the sky using Ultramarine, Cerulean and Titanium White.

Materials used:

Cadmium Red, Lemon Yellow, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean and Titanium White
Board prepared with one coat of 'Texture Paste', one coat of acrylic primer , with a 'warm' underpainting of Cadmium Red and Lemon Yellow.
